Huron/Wendat Fireplace Fan, c.1860
Beaver and floral design embroidered in moose hair. Includes original wand made of wood and ivory and mounted on a custom stand. Ladies would use these kinds of fans to keep the heat from a fireplace off their face to preserve makeup.
These embroidery techniques were most likely learned in Quebec convents in early 1700. Ursuline convent in Quebec were to educate and convert the Indian girls. In 1720 the nuns were released from this duty. The technique endured. SOLD
